All parents want the best for their children and hence work hard to provide the best for their children all the time. Parents want their children to be talented, good at studies and sports equally and also to be healthy, strong and tall. In some cases because the parents or one of the parent is short, genetically their child turn out to be short too. Short people are generally bullied through school, generally won’t make it on the basketball team and many other such occasions where their lack of height becomes a hindrance. Parents try everything for their kids to help increase their height right from particular diets to stretching exercises.
Well, what you probably did not know is that there are certain sports and activities which also help in growing a person’s height like swimming, cycling, basketball and volleyball. You will generally see that the athletes who take part in these sports are generally taller.
Volleyball is one of the best sports to help you grow taller. The constant jumping stretches your muscles which essentially over a period of time results in increase in height. The prime ages where playing volleyball will impact your height the most is before the puberty, which is 18 for women and 21 for men. Being on a team of tall people you generally try to stand tall and maintain your posture which also goes a long way to help maintain and increase your height. Every time you jump to serve the ball or return it back your leg muscles are used to make the jump and then you stretch your arms out long to hit the ball, essentially achieving a completely stretched position. This stretching causes the muscles to tear initially but then heal and regenerate to become a stronger muscle. Your bones are also an integral part if you are a volleyball player and you have to co-ordinate your muscles with your bones to make a high and precise leap.
A person’s height is not only about being short or tall, it affects the confidence and self esteem in a person. People today are very superficial and judge others on appearances and hence being short can cause a lot of problems. Volleyball and other sports can help you regain that lost confidence in yourself by increasing your height. Also, having a healthy diet with lots of proteins and milk will help increase your height.
Even the exercises that your volleyball coach or instructor will suggest in increasing height. Some of the exercises are:
- Forward Hand Walks
While keeping your abs braced and your legs straight, walk your hands out. While still keeping your legs straight, walk your feet taking small steps back up to your hands. When taking steps, you should not be using your quads or hips. Use your ankles to take small steps back up to your hands.
- Forward Lunge Walks
Take a large step forward and bring your back knee to about 3 inches off the ground. Push through the heel of the back foot to bring your back foot up even with your front foot. Repeat the lunge with the opposite foot. Keep your torso vertical and abs braced throughout the movement. Your step should be just big enough to bring your front knee above or slightly in front of your front ankle.
- Lateral Lunges
Step to the right, keeping your toes pointed straight ahead and your feet flat on the ground. Squat back and down towards your lead leg. Keep your back leg straight and your weight over the lead legs heel. Squat as low as comfortable, hold for 2 seconds and return to the starting position. Keep your body and feet facing forward. Your knee should end in line with your foot when lunging. Try to keep your lead knee above your lead ankle or midfoot, NOT out in front of your toes when lunging to the side.
